Self assessment question
|
Get to the end of my self assessment...
Total amount due for 2016-17 £2,269.40
Plus
First payment on account for 2017-18 £1,134.70
Total to be added to Self Assessment account due by 31 January 2018 £3,404.10
Now i appreciate that 2269/2 = 1134*2 and that another 1134 is due by July, but why do they add the 1134 to the 2269?
Is this just some sort of accounting terminology? \\
Thanks in advance

....as long as you pay some tax you should be fine. Also anticipate discrepancies where you may have claimed for something you shouldn't have but thought you could or thought you could claim 50% if say your mobile bill as you use it half for work when it's only probably 25%.you are allowed to claim for. Not sure myself but it's what I used to when I was self emp. Ignorance is not always a defence but it is understandable.

Have you actually submitted it? If not Just go back and edit down your income or increase your expenses, then submit again. Your bill will less.

Cheeky bastards indeed.
I am owed back 800 notes from last year that I overpaid but I've still POAs to make in Jan and June this year of £2500.

So with the POA, if you pay in advance and then in July then there should be nothing left to pay for that year right? What is this POA nonsense anyway - why should you pay them early. Is there any benefit?

It's completely normal and certainly how its been done for at least the last 15 years that I personally have expereince of.
You don't have to pay the July payment now though, obviously.

Their view is you have earnt it so you can pay the tax. but agreed cheeky bastards.
You can reduce the POA if necessary.

The £2,269 is the tax due for 2016-17. The £1,134 is a payment on account (POA) for 2017-18.
HMRC are anticipating your tax to be similar in 17-18 and therefore you need to make a POA.
Did you make any POA's for 2016-17?
